Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite to face a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike any they’ve seen before. Overcoming their own abilities, the Sonic team must find an unlikely alliance. The creators of the previous films have cited Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2001) and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) as inspiration. The film was also inspired by the narrative elements of the Saturday morning animated television series Sonic the Hedgehog (1993). In the Knuckles TV series, Sonic said, “Robotnik is gone, there’s no new fight. Fight.” However, in this film, he tells Tails and Knuckles that they need to ask Dr. Robotnik for help to defeat Shadow the Hedgehog. It is not known how they knew he was still alive.
